The African University of Science and Technology (AUST) is a pan-African educational institution created in response to Nelson Mandela’s wish that the World Bank and the African Union would collaborate to enhance sub-Saharan African capacity for science and technology through the creation of Pan-African centers of excellence. Several African heads of state worked to make Mandela’s wish a reality. Thus, in 2007, AUST was formally established as one of the first of the network of educational institutions known as the Nelson Mandela African Institutes of Science and Technology.
