National Merit Finalist Package

 

  • Value of tuition for up to five years or 10 semesters for degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate (or law) studies
  • One year of on-campus housing at regular room rate* (based on assignment by Housing and Residential Communities)
  • $3,500 per year Merit Scholarship stipend for four years.
  • One-time allowance of $2,000 for use in summer research or international study (after completing one year of study at UA)

National Merit Finalists receive a stipend for four years at $4,000 to $8,000 ($1,000 to $2,000 per year), depending on eligibility as determined by National Merit Scholarship Corporation and financial need as determined through completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)*.

National Merit Finalists should contact National Merit Scholarship Corporation to name Auburn University as their first choice institution by May 1. National Merit Finalists who wish to change a previously named first choice to Auburn must do so by an earlier deadline in April, as determined each year by National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The University of Arkansas welcomes National Merit and National Achievement finalists to campus.

  • You will become a National Merit Scholar if you list the U of A as your first choice to the Merit Corporation.
  • The U of A awards the Chancellor’s Merit Scholarship, valued at $40,000 over four years, to all National Merit finalists.
  • Merit Scholars are also competitive for Honors College Fellowships, Study Abroad Grants, and Research Grants through the Honors College.

National Merit Scholars enjoy an active honors community within our beautiful new facilities: Hotz Honors Hall and our new home in Gearhart Hall.

We also offer a rich academic experience to National Merit Scholars. Take Mathias Bellaiche, a biophysics and biophysical chemistry major who has been involved in hands-on research since his freshmen year. He’s working with Gregory Salamo, the Joe N. Basore Professor in Nanotechnology and Innovation, on a protein that may potentially be used to purify saltwater, synthesize drugs or power a home. Mathias also had the opportunity to spend his junior year at Cambridge University thanks to the Libby Finch Award. He was named a Barry Goldwater Scholar, which provides up to $7,500 in scholarship funding.

National Merit Semi-Finalists who are admitted to ASU with an official SAT or ACT score on file with the university will receive a placeholder New American University Scholar award (such as a President’s, Provost’s, or Dean’s scholarship). This placeholder award will be upgraded to the New American University Scholar – National Merit award once the following conditions have been met:

– The student has moved from National Merit Semi-Finalist status to National Merit Finalist status with the NMSC.
– The student lists Arizona State University as his or her first choice school with the NMSC by the NMSC’s posted deadline.
– The student has been admitted to Arizona State University.

This award covers basic registration fees/tuition and the university-defined cost for room and board for a traditional undergraduate as long as you live in a UI residence hall. Fees/tuition are set by the state board of education in April. The value of this award for the 2017-18 academic year is $16,158 for Idaho residents.

For non-residents a full non-resident tuition waiver (value $16,324) is also included. That’s over $64,000 in cash scholarships plus a full non-resident tuition waiver for non-residents over four years. The best news is that the value of the scholarship increases at the same rate as costs increase.
